Joseph Rotheram was born in Warwickshire on 3 November 1699. The son of Edward Rotheram and Mary (nee Harris) he emigrated to America, becoming a farmer and mill owner in White Clay Creek, New Castle County, Delaware, where he died about 1773.

In 1739 he purchased, at a sheriff's sale, a tract of land which included a saw mill and a grist mill. Known as 'Rotheram's Mill', this tract passed by inheritance in 1775 to his son Joseph, who then operated the mill. It was sold by executors in 1795.

Joseph's children included:

* Abigail Rotheram, born 3 January 1725, Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, DE; married Joseph England in 1750; died 13 May 1800, White Clay Creek Hundred, DE.

* Joseph Rotheram Jr, born approx. 1730, White Clay Creek Hundred; died May 1795, White Clay Creek Hundred.

Thanks to Carolyn Colburn, a descendant of Joseph Rotheram, for all this. Carolyn signed the guestbook on 6 October 2003 and supplied fairly extensive information about her lineage. She has since sent me more documentation, from which I have extracted the above.
